Wystan Hugh Auden was a renowned English poet, playwright, critic, and librettist who greatly shaped 20th century poetry. He grappled with moral concerns and infused his work with potent political, social, and psychological undertones. While his early writing was heavily influenced by Marx and Freud, he later turned towards religious and spiritual inspiration. During his time at Oxford, Auden played a central role in the "Oxford Group" or "Auden Generation", along with fellow writers Stephen Spender, C. Day Lewis, and Louis MacNeice.
Condition: Original grey boards a little aged to edges with gilt lettering to spine. Binding remains square, a touch softened to head of spine. Pages largely clean with a few spots of foxing to prelims. Extensive neatly written verses in ink to prelims front and back, titled 'Autobiographical Data' and 'The Witnesses'. Neatly written owner inscription to front paste down. Original jacket good only with significant wear along edges and corners. 3cm closed tear to top of jacket with some loss to top, tail and middle of spine. Not price-clipped (5s net to the front flap).
